What Is Semi Retirement? Let’s Find Out

Let’s discover what is semi retirement. As The Un-Retired Entrepreneur, I can honestly say I am semi retired. Although I have retired from my main occupation, I have pursued other opportunities on a semi retired basis. What Is Semi Retirement

Let’s investigate a little more on what this is and how it can work beneficially for you whether you have any need for additional income or not. It’s really about embracing life to such an extent that we continually grow as a person in all areas of our lives.

What Is Semi Retirement? — A Conscious Choice

Basically, being semi retired is a conscious choice that can stem from many reasons. Some folks want an additional source of income, while others prefer to stay active rather than fully retired. Many people work during retirement because they want to, but do not have to.

Some people choose to transition to part-time work within the same company from which they are retiring. Fewer hours give them more time freedom while also providing extra income. Here’s some information from the Social Security Administration (SSA) as to How Work Affects Your Social Security Benefits.

Some people merely transfer over to a less demanding job or part-time business to earn some extra money and also to stay busy. When asking what is semi retirement, all of these scenarios fall within its spectrum. Doing something less stressful and more fulfilling work can be just what many folks are looking for.

Others may delay their social security benefits to get a higher benefit later, and their retirement plan distributions so they can save more for retirement. Each person’s circumstances are unique but many fall within these general categories.

An Unexpected Aspect of Retirement — Being Bored

Of course, this does not apply to everyone. Many are fully engaged and more than busy after they retire. But for some, they choose to work part-time in order to avoid hanging around the house doing nothing other than watching the tube.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there will be over thirteen (13) million people working over the age of sixty-five (65). Again, the reasons will differ, but this is a significant amount regardless.

Many people have defined their worth and value by their jobs. For them, retirement is a scary and stressful endeavor. Money and savings have nothing to do with it. It is actually re-creating their lives so they have passion and meaning. How to invest their time to accomplish this can be quite an emotional challenge.

Creating an Online Business that encompasses one’s Interests, Passions, and Hobbies <———– Here’s an Option

For many, health is not an issue and they are able to devote the necessary time and energy in establishing a business around their experience, talents, and interests. Increased social interaction and mental challenges are just what is needed to keep up young and vibrant through this stage of our lives.

Again, when we ask ourselves, what is semi retirement, we can feel good that it is contributing to our mental acuity, longevity, and our positive impact on society as well. With the proper mindset, there is no limit to the benefits of being semi retired.

What Is Semi Retirement — Some additional Benefits

There are so many benefits to being semi retired, or un-retired, in addition to earning extra income or avoiding boredom. The tax benefits favor the semi-retired. You are able to keep about seven (7) cents more of every dollar that you earn.

You also have more time to allow your investments to grow and avoid the reduction of potential income from long-term capital gains and dividends due to taxes. This is also called tax drag.

Many people experience a degree of loneliness when they retire especially if single or widowed with no close family network. We felt useful and connected to the world while working. In a society where many get validation from their work, it is not easy to break away.

Creating a balance between leisure activity and having a positive impact on your efforts is important. Also, meeting new people allow us to create a whole new social network to avoid isolation. This is all about making the decision to retire with a purpose.

From a health standpoint, staying active both mentally and physically keeps us engaged in ways to promote our overall health long-term. Our body and mind respond well to an active lifestyle.

Most importantly the wealth of experience and knowledge gained over an individual’s lifetime is tremendous. In many cultures around the world, the elderly are held in high esteem and greatly valued. This knowledge and experience can be shared with younger workers to advance their careers and help them avoid many mistakes along the way. Mentoring the next generation is valuation and can be achieved with part-time work or being part of a mentoring group.

Having more time to pursue our interests we are able to combine our passions with creating a profitable business. Many people do some consulting, create a blog, or create a new product or service. This can be an ideal way to spend our time while supplementing our income.

What Is Semi Retirement? — Something to ConsiderWhat Is Semi-Retirement?

Now when asked what is semi retirement we have a better idea of its overall scope and potential value. Regardless of our individual situation, there is something to be gained.

Just yesterday I was speaking to someone whose husband retired in his fifties (50s) from a very hectic and stressful career. Although well off financially with a good pension from his company, retirement was not what this person expected it to be. As his wife related to me, his first few weeks away from work were very jubilant since there was much more free time, and he was no longer experiencing the stress of his former job.

But shortly thereafter, the reality of the retirement experience set in, and he soon became a bit agitated and bored. It did not take him long to find a part-time job where he had some social interaction with customers and co-workers, and he still has plenty of time for his leisure activities. His wife told me he is now a much happier man.

Needless to say, we all will experience retirement in our own unique ways. But we all want to feel we are still making a difference in the world regardless if we are conscious of this or not.

My motto as the Un-Retired Entrepreneur is “When you Love what you Do Why Retire?” I have consciously created a lifestyle to stay fully engaged in life by balancing things out in a way that makes sense to me. Health, wealth, and personal growth are daily adventures that I personally enjoy and from which I greatly benefit.

Let me know your thoughts about this and if I can help in any way. All the very Best.

Enjoy and have Fun,

Joseph William

  1. This is a great article to explain what semi-retirement is. I have worked with a lot of people close to retirement age that said they were working part time either because they needed the income because their social security wasn’t enough, or that they were bored at home. I didn’t really see much in-between. I wish there were more options for seniors, or more information about options, for them to be able to enjoy their retirement and to not become as bored and/or continue earning extra income.

  2. This is a great way to have some time in the workforce while having some of that time just to relax and unwind. I believe we should get our feet moving in this direction as we get older because I believe you can find people who work for themselves while delegating some of their work making their working life a lot easier. Thanks so much, fo sharing
