How To Live Free In An Unfree World

This article is about how to live free in an unfree world as it emphasizes that the power is within us regardless of what is going on without. We are either creators or victims and discovering our innate creative power is our path to freedom. How to Live Free in an Unfree World

In 1973 Harry Browne wrote a book called “How I Found Freedom In An Unfree World”, where he provided an enlightened solution that does not involve confronting outside forces. The book presents a way to gain our freedom, not through confrontation, but by discovering and implementing creative solutions.

“Everything you want in life has a price connected to it. There’s a price to pay if you want to make things better, a price to pay just for leaving things as they are, a price for everything.”

— Harry Browne —

How to Live Free in an Unfree World — Some Interesting Ideas

Given the challenges in the world today that are being imposed upon us by people described by Adam Smith as “men of system” who want to control things based on their own ideas of what is best, it is important to do our research and then make informed decisions based on our own desires.

Harry Browne’s more creative non-confrontational approach offers us some viable alternatives more in the tradition of Ayn Rand, who was a writer and philosopher in the 20th century.

One of the main points is that these “men of system” are not as knowledgeable and capable as assumed, and thus can be creatively avoided in most cases. It’s not about having rights and defending them because people who violate our rights don’t care and won’t stop, so it is preferable to take evasive action instead of a confrontational approach based on defending those rights.

It is in our self-interest to be responsible for our own happiness and to make conscious choices based on that interest as well as for the betterment of our fellow man. When we respect ourselves we will respect the rights of others as well.

It’s All About Timing

This is not to say there is never a time to take a more direct approach to defending our rights. The point here is that it is vital to know when that is the case and to avoid unnecessary confrontation that does not produce the desired result, and only exposes us to further challenges.

When we are attuned to what is going on by doing sufficient research, we can then let go and rely on our intuition to lead the way in making sound decisions based on the information gathered coupled with our own creative insights. This is a way of responding rather than reacting to challenges.

How to Live Free in an Unfree World — A Historical Perspective

There are many examples throughout history that give us a glimpse of what may be going on behind the scenes. I am going to quote from two historical figures who were quite enlightened in this regard.

The first is James Madison, the fourth (4th) President of the United States. This is from his written work, Political Observations, in 1795.

Here’s what he said, “Of all the enemies to public liberty, war is, perhaps, the most to be dreaded because it comprises and develops the germ of every other. War is the parent of armies; from these proceed debts and taxes…known instruments for bringing the many under the domination of the few…No nation could preserve its freedom in the midst of continual warfare.”

Here he is speaking of how a corrupt monetary system is maintained.

Instead, we need an improved system of exchange that honors all based on what is best for humanity. This would be a more intuitively based system not controlled by a few groups.

This intuitively based world is presently awakening to the corruption that abounds in all aspects of our society, and more and more people have lost trust in these current systems. The cooperation of the majority is needed to support any system, and leadership that is intuitively based will honor the needs of all and cause a transformation of these systems.

The other individual I would like to discuss is the thirty-fourth (34th) President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower.

During his presidency, the United States experienced one of the most prosperous and peaceful periods in its history. As commanding general of the U.S. forces in World War II, he developed and enhanced many valuable skills which he employed as president. “Ike” (his nickname) used those skills to negotiate a truce with Korea upon entering office.

During his two (2) terms of office (1953 to 1961) the tensions of the Cold War were eased.

Upon leaving office he made the “Military-Industrial Complex” speech which is still very relevant today by shedding some light on what is happening behind the scenes with today’s current events.

Here are a few quotes from that speech:

“America is today the strongest, most influential, and most productive nation in the world. Understandably proud of this preeminence, we yet realize that America’s leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches, and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment.”

“In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.”

We have been experiencing this unwarranted influence for quite some time now.

The last part of his speech is something to which we all, both in and out of government, should aspire:

“We pray that peoples of all faiths, all races, all nations, may have their great human needs satisfied; that those now denied opportunity shall come to enjoy it to the full; that all who yearn for freedom may experience its spiritual blessings; that those who have freedom will understand, also, its heavy responsibilities; that all who are insensitive to the needs of others will learn charity; that the scourges of poverty, disease, and ignorance will be made to disappear from the earth, and that, in the goodness of time, all peoples will come to live together in a peace guaranteed by the binding force of mutual respect and love.”

This was a man devoted to serving and protecting his country in one of the bloodiest wars in history, and he experienced the insanity of war firsthand. He knew most conflicts could be avoided, or more quickly resolved, while saving lives, materials, money, and much suffering.

How to Live Free in an Unfree World — Reclaiming Our PowerHow to Live Free in an Unfree World

“Government is force, pure and simple. There’s no way to sugar-coat that. And because government is force, it will attract the worst elements of society – people who want to use government to avoid having to earn their living and to avoid having to persuade others to accept their ideas voluntarily.”

— Harry Browne —

While consciously recognizing the true insanity of war which is based on the immense lust for power and greed, it is important to take a more constructive and positive approach to gaining our freedom as recommended by Harry Browne. Directing our inner resources in positive ways will not only bring huge benefits to ourselves but also influence others to do the same.

There are no shortcuts to freedom as evidenced by our past history with its many conflicts and challenges, but a deep and genuine resolve to do good will propel us in the proper direction to maximize our effectiveness.

As we trust ourselves more we increase our ability to make constructive changes that benefit all. It is a matter of continuing to increase our awareness by observing ourselves within and without so that we are attuned to receiving and acting upon our intuitive insights.

Learning how to live in an unfree world can not only increase our present happiness and joy but also be a vital contributing factor in transforming the overall landscape of our world. As more and more of us awaken to the truth we will bring about the positive change we all yearn to see.

  1. I agree that the government is always a force it represents Law that needs enforcement ie a police force army etc. Another radical idea is that Lore is a better word or logos to describe the forces that actually exist. The lores represent power nor force. See the Dr David Hawkins’s Book Power v Force. Thank you for the reminder about Harry Brown I haven’t read him in decades. An excellent post, I have been working towards personal sovereignty for decades.

  3. I would like to have total freedom, financially as well as autonomy for my household, especially for energy. I think that financially I have found a way by working on an income online, the home situation, I still depend on gas, some electricity and drinking water. Do you also think that this is part of the freedom you talk about?
Harry Browns book sounds interesting and I will put it on my wish list for Christmas, thanks!
