Asking ourselves how to get more website traffic is relevant whether we are just starting out, or have been in online marketing for quite some time. There are many paid and free ways to increase traffic that we should consider.
As with any project in any area of our lives, to get the best results it is best to begin with proper planning. The long route, taking the necessary time to plan things out, turns out to be the short route in the long run.
“Search engine marketing and search engine optimization are critically important to online businesses. You can spend every penny you have on a website, but it will all be for nothing if nobody knows your site is there.” — Marc Ostrofsky —
How To Get More Website Traffic — Creating a Traffic Building Plan
Before we decide whether to use free traffic, paid traffic, or a combination of the two, it is advisable to do some research and due diligence in how to approach the traffic issue, specifically in regard to our target market and website/landing page.
Once we have our website or landing page built, we need to create a traffic plan built around a few basics such as search engine optimization (SEO), social media presence, placement of internet ads, creating good publicity for our product/service/website by having links to our site from well-known or popular pages and creating a desirable brand for ourselves and our business.
These are all important ingredients in getting more traffic to our site, but these are all dependent on having a strong foundation in place, and that foundation must be built on value and flow.
Creating Value and Flow
In order to get targeted traffic (people interested in what we have to offer and will stick around long enough to get convinced) which has a higher probability to “convert” into buyers, it is important to design our pages so that value is recognized in the first “five (5) to ten (10) seconds” a visitor arrives, and then reinforced for another “ten (10) seconds”, so that some interest may be created.
If a visitor stays on your website for longer than twenty (20) seconds, the percentages increase rapidly this visitor may subscribe or buy.
If you have been in the online world for any length of time, you will have heard that “Content is King”. Good content creates value (value of current page and potential Value of other pages), which then translates into Flow.
When there is a balance between how difficult it is to use a website and the rewards gained from that website, flow is more likely to occur. Flow is when a person lands on your website and gets so involved in it that time just flies. The person is so engaged that nothing else going on matters. They are totally engaged in your content.
This is a very Critical Point in the marketing process. When a person has attained the State of Flow, impulse buying is very likely to occur, and inhibitions and caution fade away. This person then is much more likely to purchase what we have to offer, or opt-in to our list.
For this to occur our site has to be of value, which creates interest, as well as easy to navigate; interest overrides any difficulty in navigation.
How To Get More Website Traffic — Understanding Precedes Action
To become or remain an effective internet marketer, it is very important to understand the ins and outs of traffic on the web. Foremost, traffic consists of human beings like ourselves and our family and friends. We all have interests, feelings, and desires that are most important to us.
By putting ourselves in their space, we realize that it is all about what they are looking to find to solve their individual challenges and problems, and not what we want them to find, or what we want to sell them.
Valuable content and ease of use will get our target market’s attention and interest. By properly positioning our site within the flow of internet traffic, we have greatly increased our odds of attracting the type and quantity of traffic to whom we may provide the most benefit.
At this point, we will be taking Effective Action in all of our marketing and advertising and have answered the question on how to get more website traffic.
Enjoy your digital marketing journey,

Hi Joseph, I have been looking into traffic generation methods recently for a new blog. You make a very good point about getting the reader to stay for longer. The way I try to do this is by starting the article with a powerful hook. Getting straight to the point. I think you have done this yourself with the way you have opened up. Looking at newspaper articles are a good resource for people I think if they want to understand this. Also the flow you mention I think is very important I like to be able to read my articles out loud as if I am talking whilst people are reading.
I’m kind of a bit new to this all not going to lie but yes growing traffic is right up there for me with commissions. I was a bit disappointed this month not to make any by I was very happy to break a new record for impressions and daily CTR. I think it is these things that keep me going aside from revenue so thanks for the tips.
Best regards
Alex
You make a lot of good points Alex. Congrats on the CTR and impressions. The conversions and income will come as your targeted traffic increases and you continue to define your market. Once you are getting steady conversions from your organic traffic you will then be in a position to consider paid traffic strategies to scale things up. All the very best.
I’ve actually neglected my sites a bit and suffered because of it. I’ve been so busy helping everyone else I forgot I need to run a business too. Your article helped me steer back on course.
Thanks Millie for your thoughts. I am happy that you are back on track. All the Best.
