How To Break Inertia — Getting Stuff Done

How to break inertia in order to get stuff done is a rather simple process that often gets complicated. There are many reasons for this, but it basically comes down to one: Fear. How To Break Inertia

Although fear is merely an illusion, actually nothing at all, it does have its effects when we buy into it by our belief. Breaking inertia involves confronting this false image upfront, dissecting it a bit, and coming to the full understanding and realization that we are reacting to a state that does not even exist.

“Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. Right now, today, we are still alive, and our bodies are working marvelously. Our eyes can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears can still hear the voices of our loved ones.” — Thich Nhat Hanh —

How To Break Inertia — The Virginity of the Present Moment

Within the present moment is evidence that fear does not exist. All is well in the Now. There is nowhere to go and nothing to get. We are grateful for our very existence when we reside in the moment.

Each moment is an opportunity to create anew. When we are aware of the present we are not affected by the illusions of the past or future. We reside in the perfect safety of the now, where fear does not exist, so it cannot affect our choices.

It is in the present that we break free from the inertia and proceed on our individual journey toward full self-expression. The present moment is the answer as to how to break inertia in any area of our lives.

The First Step, then the Next Step…

It all starts with a first step and then we take the next step. When we are focused on the present moment each step naturally leads to the next.

Any initial plan we put in place for getting stuff done in any area of our lives is always subject to change based on our gathering of new information and experiences. This is what opens us to new possibilities that we could never have envisioned without taking that first step no matter the uncertainty and how uncomfortable we may have felt.

It is in the virginity of the present moment that all this newness is experienced. This is where our intuition kicks in to supplement our logical reasoning and prior research.

A Few Steps to Take to Break the Inertia

Now let’s outline a few practical steps to make this more real so that we can actually experience this in our lives.

  1. Refuse to accept anything less than playing full out
  2. Realize that our potential is limitless
  3. It is about Who We Are and not who we are pretending to be
  4. As we break the inertia and move forward our awareness increases
  5. Accept where we are now in terms of our present circumstances
  6. Define what we want to achieve specifically
  7. Take the first step in that direction no matter how small (just get started)
  8. Listen carefully to our Marching Orders or intuitive insights on how to proceed

Dealing with the Resistance along the Way…

“Open your eyes, look within. Are you satisfied with the life you’re living?” — Bob Marley”

This is where the fun begins. Whenever we make any changes in our lives resistance kicks up. This affects us most when we are not focused on the now, and allow the memories of the past and the worries of the future to filter in.

But this also presents us with a great opportunity to become aware of the limiting ideas and beliefs that are responsible for our so-called fears. These are the ideas that make the fear seem so real.

When we move in a new direction they have to show themselves and no longer remain hidden and controlling us behind the scenes. By exposing themselves we can confront and deal with them in one (1) of two (2) ways:

  1. Observe the ideas, feel the fear, and let them dissolve into their own nothingness
  2. If it is more persistent, observe and feel and allow ourselves to forget (we get or obtain a new idea based on truth to replace the limiting belief)

When we accept and live the truth in spite of appearances we do not let appearances affect our lives. Over time, and sometimes immediately, the appearances transform to match up with the truth.

Enjoy the process and have fun with it. Mistakes are part of the journey. We just pick ourselves up and begin again.

How To Break Inertia, Get Stuff Done, & Live Full OutHow To Break Inertia

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes. Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You’re doing things you’ve never done before, and more importantly, you’re doing something.”

  — Neil Gaiman —

Alright, we have now arrived at a point of clearing up some misconceptions about ourselves and our potential, and have increased our understanding at least a bit on how to break inertia. It really allows us to not only get more stuff done but to be fully engaged in life.

When we live and play full out we are not compromising our inner values, but are pursuing our true purpose in life. Living an ordinary life is no longer an option.

There is an Inner Genius within us all that desperately wants to emerge and fill our days with excitement and wonder. This part of us is the authentic self that communicates with us through our intuition at the right time and in the right way.

This is about learning how to discover your purpose in life.

This is not something we can force to happen, but we can prepare the foundation for its emergence through trusting ourselves enough to take notice and act upon these insights. We should wait patiently for our Marching Orders and act decisively when they arrive.

As part of our preparation, we accept where we are now giving ourselves credit for all we have accomplished, and recognize the hidden value in every mistake we have ever made. Then we are able to set our objective based on a burning desire within ourselves and move forward with confidence willing to deal with any resistance along the way.

Doing our best, playing full out, and getting stuff done is always good enough because of what we continually learn along the way. We are improving whether we realize it or not, and it is just a matter of time for us to see visible results.

How to break inertia takes a bit of courage to get started but the momentum in the direction we desire to go is maintained through diligence and perseverance. That is something that we can employ right this very moment.

Have some fun busting through the illusions. Live with passion.

All the Best,

Joseph William

  1. Hey Joseph, thanks for writing about this. It´s never easy to look into us and find what or who we are. As you mention, fear is the biggest rock on our way, and it´s really difficult to accept it (cause in my opinion we cannot dominate fear, but learn to live with it). Giving ourself creadit for what we accomplished is one of the biggest goals, as nowadays, in this modern world we live, we want things to show results immediately, never taking into consideration that we need to follow the whole process. Nice way of writing and excellent way to put into words what most of us think, but FEAR to say.
