Retirement your way is the “only” way to go, especially when you realize that you have more options than you may currently even realize. Take a look at my article on semi-retirement options for a few ideas.
In this article, we will be focusing specifically on earning an income while enjoying an ideal semi-retirement lifestyle. So, let’s discuss how to earn an income while also enjoying our retired life.
How to Earn Extra Income in Retirement
Now there are many ways to earn some money during our retirement years. But what we are discussing here is beyond making ends meet or finding ways to keep busy. Of course, these are important factors in our lives, but what we are most interested in is creating retirement your way, which will be very different from mine and others.
There are many job options available, as evidenced by this Job Site for Seniors. I also outlined some of the Best Semi-Retirement Jobs in an article I recently wrote.
The other part of the equation is “benefiting from retired life”. This is the part that is most important to our fulfillment and happiness. Regardless of our age, we are able to make choices in the direction of our deep desires and passions for living. This is something on which most of us have all compromised over the years for one reason or another.
Earning extra income during our semi-retirement adventure now requires us to put ourselves first, and to honor my innermost needs and desires. All that is required is a little bit of contemplation and strategic planning. A rather simple process, but one easy to put off because of the many excuses or more appropriately, lies, we are in the habit of telling ourselves.
Retirement Your Way — A Semi-Retired Mindset
Rather than just drifting into our retirement years based on the unrealistic expectations of a traditional retirement scenario, let’s be a bit more proactive and create the lifestyle we really desire. Let’s keep this simple and eliminate the complexity.
A semi-retired mindset revolves around us being true to ourselves and not settling for less. We start by assessing our current situation honestly so that we have a valid starting point. Now we can fill in the gaps from there.
Here are a few points to consider in creating retirement your way:
- determine what is your main need and/or desire
- do the appropriate research to discover your options
- select the preferred options
- do a bit of networking and gather more info
- create a plan of action
- begin setting things up
Again, this will be different for everyone. The main factor here is “clarity of intention”. As long as you are on the right path more blanks will be filled in each step of the way.
This clarity of intention will create the kind of semi-retired mindset that will lead to a very interesting and fun adventure as you move into retirement. It is our mindset that either moves us forward or keeps us stuck.
Benefiting from a Semi-Retired Lifestyle
There are so many benefits from living a semi-retired lifestyle. In addition to earning extra income doing something that is enjoyable, we are able to gain the feeling of accomplishment and self-worth. We have positioned ourselves, based on our unique and individual plan of action, to make a positive difference in the lives of many others.
This may be working in a retail store and brightening the day of people who are lost within their habitual thoughts of fear and worry. Don’t downplay the importance of a smile to the right person at the right time. The ramifications can extend way beyond what we can even imagine.
Also, our semi-retired adventure may take us into a new hobby or interest that we are pursuing. Always remember that it only takes a bit more knowledge in any area to be able to provide answers to questions and solutions that people are seeking.
We may choose to do some consulting or start a whole new career. There are many examples of people becoming lawyers, doctors, and other types of professionals late in life. It is all about that clarity of intention and thought.
Retirement your way is based on earning an income in your most desired fashion. It is also based on enjoying your free time and maximizing your happiness.
Retirement is Sweet
When you create retirement your way, it can be very sweet indeed. Rather than settling for the bitter illusions of traditional retirement, we can take the bull by the horns and create a semi-retired life that truly works for us.
As I have mentioned previously, this need not be hard or complex. It merely requires that we choose to spend a little time in contemplation of what is most important to ourselves at this point in time regardless of our current age and circumstances.
Always remember this:
It is Never too Late to Begin.
Our age and circumstances just define a starting point for us from which to progress. Any resistance that surfaces from even thinking about doing this is to our advantage as this resistance has just exposed some of our limiting ideas and beliefs that have kept us stuck up to this point.
Here’s an article on Resistance to Change that I wrote a couple of years ago that may assist you in addressing this issue and using it to your benefit. These limiting ideas are not buried as deeply as many may think; we just need to rearrange our focus a bit so that we are “aware” of what has been there all along influencing our lives.
Many of these “lies that we tell ourselves” will immediately dissolve from the mere awareness of them. Others we just need to acknowledge and let them go by replacing them with empowering thoughts and ideas about the truth of who we are and of what we are capable.
At this point, we continue our journey of creating and embracing our desired semi-retired life. Each moment becomes precious as we cherish our thoughts and feelings and welcome all challenges. We are no longer the effect but the cause of our lives.
Retirement becomes sweet for many more reasons than we initially thought even with all of our contemplation, research, and planning. We discover that our happiness and fulfillment is not only a reflection of living life on our terms but even more importantly being an excellent example and role model for others to follow.
Retirement your way becomes an adventure into positively impacting the lives of others as well as maximizing our own enjoyment. The only price to pay is a realization that we are capable of being the cause, rather than the effect, of our retirement scenario.
May you choose wisely on your journey,
Joseph William

Knowing full well we each hold our own future in the palm of our hands, the only way we can make the best out of it is through positive thinking, as well as positive action! I know of too many people who should be retired by now still working many hours just to make ends meet. I know they want to retire, or at least semi-retire but have placed themselves in difficult situations where they simply can’t do that at this time.
I’ve been urging them to come to your website and read over your articles and reviews. I know they are most useful as I’ve been applying much of what you’ve written so far to my own situation.
Thanks so much, Millie for your comments and thoughts. Also, thanks for sharing my website with others. When people are ready they will move forward. All we can do is plant a few positive seeds here and there. All the very Best.
Hello, I enjoyed reading this piece. and I agree that retiring is wonderful, especially when things go your way. It just necessitates that we choose to spend some time reflecting on what is most important to us at this time, regardless of our age.We just need to empower our thoughts and ideas about who we are and what we can accomplish.
Retiring in your own style can assist you in maintaining your hopes.
I appreciate it.

Thank you so much for providing valuable information that is helpings many people especially those who have now entered those golden years. It is good to know that despite those golden years you can still be of good use where people can benefit from your service. Why should you throw in the towel when even in your golden years you have so much to offer. Thanks again for sharing.
Thank you so much, Norman for your thoughts and comments regarding my article on generating additional income in retirement. You are so correct that everyone has something to contribute regardless of age. All the very Best.
Hi Joseph
I love this approach to retirement your way. Being the cause rather than the effect is such an awesome way to approach everything in our lives. Thank you for reminding us all that it is the same for all of our lives.
In the future, I see a private 2 lane 25-yard swimming pool. This is something I have been grappling with a bit thinking it may be a bit over the top. Just this morning I was pondering it again and came to the realization that our current lifestyles (thanks to Covid) may mean that having my own private 25-yard swimming pool could be the only way I will safely be able to enjoy the health benefits of swimming fitness in the foreseeable future. No longer is it over the top but now a necessity.
Thank you for this really interesting article, it helped me a lot! ?
Thanks for your comments, Louise. It is always good to be consciously the cause because we are the cause regardless of our level of awareness. By accepting our power in the present moment we can consciously design and create the life we most desire. In fact, my family just had a discussion about building a similar type of swimming pool. All the Best.
