Low self-worth is devastating to our success in life. Regardless of what may have caused it, there is a way to turn things around.
Living life based on “less than” is not okay. To remedy this and make practical improvements to our overall well-being, it is necessary to find the real reason behind our feelings of low self-worth.
The Origin of Our Low Self-Worth
“The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” — Michelangelo —
Why do we feel the way we do? Of course, our feelings and emotions constantly change, but there are a few core feelings we experience consistently that either enhance our lives or detract from them.
These feelings of low self-worth are a combination of internal and external forces. When we receive negative feedback from parents or persons in authority during our early years, we tend to feel inadequate or “less than”.
Any experience of failure or rejection leaves its negative imprint. When we make social comparisons, we often feel inadequate or have an overrated feeling of superiority based on low self-esteem.
All internal factors are based on fear due to limiting beliefs about ourselves. This results in cognitive distortions, acceptance of false societal standards, and consistent negative self-talk.
All of this forms our self-perception negatively. This leads to chronic feelings of unworthiness and inferiority.
The real reason you are struggling with low self-worth is your acceptance of lies about yourselves.
The Desire to Change
“The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential… these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.” — Confucius —
To correct this situation, a strong desire to change is necessary. Having bought into the belief of low self-worth, it’s vital to clean house to express the truth of our being.
We desire a different outcome. To achieve this we need to make some changes that will result in improvement and growth.
We recognize the need for transformation in all areas involving our careers, relationships, and personal habits. This desire motivates us to take action. It also fosters creativity, inspires resilience, and breaks us free from stagnation.
Now we can embrace new opportunities without self-doubt and worry. Being a fundamental aspect of human existence, change leads to progress and greater fulfillment.
Breaking Free from Low Self-Worth
“It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere.” — Voltaire —
We break free from low self-worth when we decide to do so. This sounds simple, but this decision meets with great resistance because of the lies we believe about ourselves.
A multi-faceted approach helps in breaking free from low self-worth. Positive affirmations, self-reflection, and other self-improvement techniques are helpful, but will not provide a full release until we get to the cause.
We begin by identifying and challenging these lies about ourselves in the form of negative beliefs. Then we change things up a bit by reframing these ideas with constructive thoughts that emphasize our accomplishments and strengths.
While going through this process it helps tremendously to surround ourselves with supportive people that will not detract from but reinforce our positive self-image.
Also, setting achievable goals will reinforce what is possible and foster a sense of confidence. Self-care is also critical. Exercise, mindfulness, and expressing ourselves creatively all go a long way in creating positive proof of our worthiness.
As our self-esteem grows we are motivated to cultivate more compassionate and healthier ideas about ourselves.
Losing the Resistance
“The more important a call to action is to our soul’s evolution, the more Resistance we will feel about answering it. But to yield to Resistance deforms our spirit. It stunts us and makes us less than we are and were born to be.” — Steven Pressfield —
As a result of all of these positive changes, we become less resistant to expressing our true selves. At some point, we will have eliminated the barriers to our authentic selves.
We will not only be able to manage our resistance to change, but we will have uprooted the cause and eliminated it entirely. This is something to truly celebrate.
Let’s embrace life instead of resisting it. This is a true transformative experience.
When we let go of judgment and allow ourselves to go with the flow we have learned to adapt and grow. With this, we gain greater clarity and peace so that we handle challenges more easily and appreciate the sacredness of the present moment.
As we trust in the journey we let go of trying to control. We recognize that every experience contributes to our overall growth and well-being.
The opposition or innate struggle we face when confronted with changes and challenges can be a gift in disguise when we utilize them to grow and expand. Once we accomplish our desire despite any resistance, we have strengthened our inner framework.
What was once a big problem is now handled easily in the future. With our increased self -awareness we now are much more adaptable and willing to embrace life’s complexities and challenges.
Transforming Low Self-Worth into Something Special
“I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy.” — Rabindranath Tagore —
We experience low self-worth when we focus on the problem and do not allow the solution to enter. By asking the right question the answer is revealed.
With all the focus on ourselves and the problem at hand, we put up an invisible barrier to having our problem solved. Each challenge can be a gift that strengthens us.
One way to take the emphasis off of our problems is with a compassionate attitude toward others. This allows us the space to let go of our situation and focus on serving others in need.
When we help others we feel good. There is no better way to increase our happiness and joy than to find ways to serve. Volunteering can be a viable way to do this for some.
Once we realize that low self-worth is a false assumption on our part, we can do what is necessary to transform our lives. When transforation occurs we not only experience increased joy, happiness, and contentment, but we develop a strong desire to be of service.

Hi Joseph,
Another inspirational article my friend.
About 7 years ago, I felt low within myself because of how I was performing in my job at the time. I was a deputy head of engineering in a UK Rail company, but it wasn’t going well.
The main reason was myself, I wasn’t a strong enough leader and I didn’t look after my team well enough. Even though my heart was in the right place, my ways of going about things were just wrong.
Anyway, I also put this down to the way I was led by by own boss and also his boss.
So when I left the job I decided I would start work on myself to improve for my future roles. That’s when I started writing about my leadership journey, and I have been doing ever since. It has changed my life, and I am working towards it changing it even more.
I will share how I am going with you and hopefully your readers can resonate and share their thoughts too.
Thank you for sharing and keep up the amazing work.
All the best,
Tom
