Enlightened People Today — Not Far Away

Who are the enlightened people today? Over the years we have had many great thinkers who have produced remarkable work in several fields.

Enlightened People Today

Even today we have many outstanding minds that are paving the way in technology, health, and other areas. But what I would like to discuss here are the enlightened folks among us who go unnoticed to a large degree, and what makes them so special.

Enlightened People Today — The Special Person Next Door

“He who knows others is wise. He who knows himself is enlightened.”

— Lao Tzu —

When we think of an enlightened person it is natural to identify those with special gifts, great insight, or spiritual illumination. These folks display wisdom, understanding, and open-mindedness.

Having a deep understanding of different perspectives, they are quite often empathetic and self-aware. We think of scientists, humanitarians, philosophers, and spiritual leaders as part of this category.

Although this is often the case, having outstanding credentials in a specific field does not automatically qualify one for enlightenment. Many gifted folks do not have the self-knowingness that leads to a life of service.

An enlightened person is most concerned about the betterment of his fellow beings and the world. This person sees beyond the everyday tasks to the unity and oneness of all.

All may not be conscious of this, but they are enlightened nonetheless. That person may be living a quiet and unassuming life right next door to us.

Beyond Assumptions and Judgment

“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”

— Eleanor Roosevelt —

The idea here is to never assume anything about anyone without expecting to be proven incorrect once all the info is on the table. I am sure we all have had numerous experiences of this occurring throughout our lives.

Enlightened people fall within all categories. Although not necessarily religious, they do quite often have a strong spiritual presence.

One certain thing is they are lifelong learners who are always expanding their knowledge and understanding of life and a deeper reality. They readily question their assumptions and beliefs and are open to new ways of viewing things.

They are beacons of hope and what is possible. They see goodness in all and a more harmonious and peaceful world in the making.

These folks are less interested in judging others than in finding ways to cooperate and discover what we all have to share. They are aware and seek to identify the unique gifts of others and assist them in becoming more aware.

Enlightened People Today — No Ordinary Moments

“Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary.”

— Gerald Way —

There are no ordinary moments when we are in an enlightened state of mind. Each moment is precious and enlightened people today realize this.

No gesture of kindness is too small or insignificant. What may appear to be only a little bit of generosity or kindness can make a world of difference to another.

An encouraging word, a smile, a helpful hand, or just being available as needed are all gifts from the heart of an enlightened person. Miracles, large or small, occur every day regardless if we notice them or not.

Let’s discuss how we can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary on a day-by-day, moment-to-moment basis.

A Few Tips on Living an Enlightened and Extraordinary Life

“The moment you have in your heart this extraordinary thing called love and feel the depth, the delight, the ecstasy of it, you will discover that for you the world is transformed.”

— Jiddu Krishnamurti —

  • Put Our House in Order — this is a vital step as when we have so much excess baggage comprised of false limiting beliefs and inaccurate perceptions we are unable to act in an enlightened way. Instead, we are governed by fear. A close examination of our everyday thoughts and feelings will lead us to their underlying beliefs which have mostly been formed in the past through stressful and painful experiences. They now act as our protector to avoid similar events in the future. But their protection comes at a great cost to us in terms of joy, happiness, and peace of mind. Once examined we will discover that we have outgrown most of these beliefs, and the others are blatantly untrue. Some served us well when we were young, but are no longer necessary today. After discovering what these beliefs are we can then make the conscious choice between truth and illusion.
  • Gain Clarity on Life Purpose — we function best when we have a vision of who we are and what we are meant to do in this lifetime. We each have unique gifts to share with others as we expand and grow together. Our purpose is hidden in our ,. Identifying what we love to do most will reveal our true purpose in life. We can then effortlessly set goals that are heartfelt and make sense to us. Work then is an enjoyable process of living fully day by day. At this point, we never stop learning and expanding.
  • Follow Our Inspiration — being guided from within rather than confused from without makes a tremendous difference in how we view life and interact. Remembering that what we see is only a projection of our inner thoughts and beliefs, it is critical to listen to the “voice within the silence”. We do our due diligence and research as needed, but then let go and await our “Marching Orders” from within.
  • No Regrets — when we pursue our heartfelt desires failure is not an option. We are , in our efforts because we want to be. We attract like-minded people who support our efforts and reinforce our commitment and mindset. We step out of our comfort zone and take risks so that we never have any regrets. Without any fear of failure, we approach life with preparation, dedication, and enthusiasm.
  • Play Full Out — this is the best way to avoid regrets. When we do our best we let go and allow the results to show up. We are not attached to any given outcome.
  • Live within the Present Moment — when we are focused on the present we add fuel to our efforts similar to the sun shining through a magnifying glass. We are resilient in the face of challenges and believe in our capabilities and potential.

Enlightened People Today Don’t Make The Simple Complex

Enlightened People Today

“That’s been one of my mantras – focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.”

— Steve Jobs —

All the answers to whatever questions we may have are always available. They are just waiting patiently to come through the heavy cloud cover of complexity that we have constructed to block their entry.

Of course, we have not done this on purpose, but nonetheless, we have constructed the very barriers that keep us from discovering our true potential. It’s about time to pierce the veil of this illusion of complexity and live an authentic existence.

Even though the cloud cover is an illusion, it seems very real. In addition, we have amassed a large amount of “facts”, or “accepted fiction”, to support our case of its reality.

Enlightened people today have learned to break free of this illusion so that they see things as they really are. All judgments and assumptions are put aside.

Let’s keep things very simple by taking one small step in the direction of our enlightenment by deciding to observe our thoughts and feelings daily. By doing this we will uncover the “cause” of any complexity in our underlying beliefs that are responsible for how we view ourselves, others, and the world.

This is a small price to pay as any enlightened people today would verify and agree.

  1. This website is chalked full of uplifting, kind, and beautiful quotes. Just reading them puts my mind to rest and transports me into a peaceful, calm place. I don’t have much to say because the words and images say a lot. It must take practice and a whole lot of meditation and self-discipline to get to this state.

  2. This is an interesting and thought provoking post on enlightenment. To me a person that is enlightened, does not necessarily only fall into the categories of scientist, philosopher, humanitarians and spiritual leaders, that you mention. They could also fall into other categories like education. And I have met some men that regard themselves as spiritual, but are not enlightened.

To me an enlightened person is open to suggestions, others ideas and innovations and will be prepared to advocate change if needed. And I certainly agree that “he who knows himself, is enlightened”.

    • Thanks so much, Line, for your thoughts on this. A heart filled with love creates an enlightened being, and not merely a few letters at the end of one’s name. All the very Best. Joseph

  3. Hi Joseph,

Such an interesting article as always with your posts.

Enlightened and inspirational people I look up to a lot with the work that I do on my own blog and website.

Steve Jobs was one enlightened person that I looked up to (and still do) with the work he did, but also the legacy he has left on the world with Apple still as strong as it is.

One of the things I am planning to do with the work I am doing is to leave as much of a legacy as I can on the world, along with being as much of an inspiration as I can be while I am still here.

I wouldn’t have had this mindset if it wasn’t for the enlightened people I look up to.

Thank you for sharing and keep up the amazing you do on this website.

    All the best,

    Tom

  4. This is beautifully written, inspirational and enlightening! I am on a spiritual path myself and look for the good in every situation even the negative that inevitably is always a part of life. I take the negative and turn it into a positive all the time and focus on what I can learn from others negative feeling and emotions. When I do this I can find good in it just by understanding how others are feeling and being empathetic to their individual situations. When I do this I feel more appreciative of my own life and of those around me. Again truly beautiful article!
