Best Semi Retirement Jobs

What are some of the best semi retirement jobs? Again, like anything else, to a large extent, this depends on our individual situation as well as prior experience and our unique interests, skills, and talents.Best Semi Retirement Jobs

Let’s explore a few ideas that will get us headed in the right direction. Also, I look forward that we will take these ideas to consider them further until they stimulate further insights and research.

Best Semi Retirement Jobs — If It isn’t Fun Don’t

Do It

This is one of the most critical aspects of considering any type of work after formal retirement. Many people did not enjoy their primary work over the years of their career, so now retired it is even more important to only do activities that bring satisfaction.

Regardless of any pressing financial concern, there are ways to earn income and enjoy the process as well. Many have been fortunate to have achieved this during the bulk of their working career.

When we enjoy what we do it is not working at all. During my many years of working with children and adults in mental health and human services, I never considered it work. It was just an extension of my life. (although the paperwork and administrative parts of the job were a bit less appealing????).

Especially at this point in our life, it is important to release the stress and allow ourselves to have some fun and enjoy all aspects of our life. This doesn’t mean every moment will be ecstatic, but it does mean that we have the choice to do the necessary research and create the lifestyle that we most desire in our semi-retirement.

The best semi-retirement jobs, although numerous, must revolve around our passions, interests, and desires. We must only do what we most desire to do.

A Few Jobs to Consider

Now let’s consider a few basic options. Some of these may be appealing, while others may at least stimulate further thought and research into the best semi-retirement jobs specifically for you.

* Consulting — this may be using our prior experience to serve our former company and industry, or we may choose to take our developed skills into a whole new area of endeavor. Many companies are seeking talented individuals to work on a project-by-project basis so we can only work as much as we desire without committing to any full-time endeavor.

* Teaching — there are a wide variety of ways to go here including teaching adult classes at local high schools and colleges, part-time faculty at a local college, teaching English as a second language locally or anywhere in the world, and even creating our own workshop or online course based on our passions and experiences. Given a bit of creative thought, we can discover many avenues of approach in this area. There are also teaching assistant jobs available providing students with extra assistance and attention in the classroom.

* Retail Jobs — many people enjoy staying busy and getting a bit of social interaction and retail fills this requirement very well. In a previous article, I described a friend whose husband retired but quickly became bored, and took a retail position part-time and he is now a happy camper. Employee discounts are an added benefit of working in the retail world. The choices are numerous including sporting goods, clothing stores, grocery, building supplies and materials, automotive, hobby, and musical instruments.

* Financial — based on your skills many folks earn additional income from preparing taxes either using prior knowledge and experience or getting trained. There are also bookkeeping and accounting clerk jobs that involve producing financial reports, and posting financial transactions using financial accounting software.

* Event Planning — for people that do well with organizing things and love planning special occasions and events, this can be an ideal part-time income activity. You can either work for someone else or start your own business as an event planner or coordinator.

* Gigs of All Sorts — this is the ideal temporary short-term job to earn some income without any long-term commitment. We are basically being compensated for the time that we spend on a job or project. Some popular gigs are Uber driver, rent a room for Airbnb, Amazon Flex, answer questions on JustAnswer, DoorDash, sell items on Craigslist or eBay, Lyft, Grubhub, Taskrabbit, recycle used smartphones on Gazelle, Posmates Courier, and Instacart. The more high-paying gigs are tech-based such as robotics, Lamda coding, Amazon Web Services, managing social media for small businesses, virtual reality, blockchain architecture, ethical hacking, Artificial Intelligence/Deep Learning, selling services on Fiverr, and cryptocurrency.

* Digital Marketing — this is my favorite because it allows us to use all of our experiences during our lives and combine that with our hobbies and passions to create businesses that solve problems for others. Just remember, we only need to know a little bit more to be of service to others who have a specific problem. As our business grows we learn more and naturally increase the level of our expertise and effectiveness. There are many areas of digital marketing from which to choose and specialize. To begin it’s important for us to get trained and learn the basics. Read my review of this Online Training Platform that allows us to earn while we learn.

If nothing else, it’s important that we make the effort to spend some time alone reflecting on what we really want to do with our time at this point in our lives. Any financial need will work itself out in this process.

Since we have gotten to this point in our lives, it is obvious we always found a way to get by. Previously, we may not have always found the ideal solution, but we did the best with could at that time.

  1. Thank you for this great list of jobs that can be done in semi-retirement.  I am semi-retired and enjoy my time nannying my grandchildren while their parents work.  While they do compensate me, it’s far less than a daycare would cost (so win-win).  I also do “home party” sales (Facebook parties only) and am trying my hand at affiliate marketing. It’s been a great experience so far.  As you say, it should be fun because (heck yes!) I’m retired!

  2. Just loved to read this post. Semi retirement jobs are important and must be something you enjoy at old age. I am always busy and will most likely be busy as well when I am old. A person must think carefully and take enough time to decide which job would they like to do. For me, I would love to work online with my hobbies in order to interact with other people that have the same interests.
