It is commonly thought that the opposite of procrastination is getting stuff done or being proactive. To a certain degree, this is true. But let’s investigate a bit and bump it up to another level.
Let’s spend a few moments exploring not only why we procrastinate, but a simple process to effortlessly move beyond any desire to procrastinate. As strange as it may seem, not procrastinating is not all about taking action. There is much more involved.
“Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday.”
Why do We Procrastinate?
This is an excellent question to begin our process of investigating of this subject. Once we know why we are better able to determine how to move forward on a consistent basis constructively.
Many think it’s a way of avoiding stuff we don’t want to do, but it actually goes deeper than that. The pain of doing the task seems greater than not doing it. We feel safer not doing it.
Some describe it as self-sabotage but I prefer to think of it as a “lack of clarity”. We simply are not clear on what is most important to us, and we have not developed the self-confidence to know we can get stuff done.
When we are clear and want it bad enough we will find a way.
Managing any negative feelings which are based on fear, becomes a lot easier when we reverse the tables and put ourselves in the position of wanting the result more than our fear of the unknown.
We are basically giving much more attention to what we do not want, and are not focusing on what we most desire once we have determined what that is.
What is the Opposite of Procrastination then?
“Turning pro is a mindset. If we are struggling with fear, self-sabotage, procrastination, self-doubt, etc., the problem is, we’re thinking like amateurs. Amateurs don’t show up. Amateurs crap out. Amateurs let adversity defeat them. The pro thinks differently. He shows up, he does his work, he keeps on truckin’, no matter what.”
The opposite of procrastination is a purpose-driven mindset.
This may sound rather simplistic on the surface, but once it is attained it does tremendously simplify our lives by keeping us on track in the direction we desire to go.
Once this mindset is attained all action is on auto-pilot. When we truly desire to get something done we will simply not allow anything to get in our way of its accomplishment.
What the opposite of procrastination is NOT is running around taking massive action without any direction or burning desire for the result.
It’s not about proving to ourselves that we can overcome our fears and get stuff done, although that is a residual bonus. It’s about doing the things necessary to accomplish our clarified purpose.
Doing stuff for the sake of keeping busy will not get us to our desired destination or if it does it will not be an enjoyable experience. It is necessary to have a plan based on our goals and desires that our meaningful to us.
With this in place, we cannot stop our efforts no matter how hard we may try. We want it to such an extent that any roadblocks or challenges are just temporary hindrances along the way to our accomplishments.
The interesting thing is that once we have a clear purpose it’s a done deal. From that point, we will joyfully fulfill our purpose because we are inner-driven and inspired to do so.
Creating Meaningful Tasks
When it comes to doing simple tasks around the house or even at work it is easy to put them off when they are more of a nuisance than something we consider worthwhile.
Even in these cases, it is possible to feel good about getting it done by realizing even the smallest task completed well increases our overall self-image as a dynamic achiever.
People who now accomplish big things started with accomplishing smaller tasks that they most likely didn’t want to do. As we expand our comfort zone things get easier.
What happens when we create a Purpose-Driven Mindset is that we treat every task as the most important because it is currently in front of us to complete. Over time momentum builds and our inner strength increases.
We suddenly realize that we are accomplishing bigger and bigger assignments and tasks not because of increased willpower or forcing things to happen, but because of Who We Have Become.
We create meaningful tasks by the simple process of labeling them meaningful. That is all there is to it. There is no need to make this a complex issue.
We have no problem labeling our feeling and thoughts as this or that thing that we should fear or worry about. If we’re going to spend time labeling stuff, let’s “choose” to label it in empowering ways.
From a more scientific standpoint, we can talk about the limbic system being the part of our brain focused on our survival, the prefrontal cortex being in charge of our decision-making and other cognitive functions, and how they all fit together in relation to procrastinating.
Although it may be a fascinating subject to explore, it is just not at all necessary in understanding why we procrastinate and how we can use the opposite of procrastination, or a purpose-driven mindset to accomplish more in a meaningful way.

The Opposite Of Procrastination is Much More Powerful than Just Getting Stuff Done
Getting stuff done is a good thing, but with a purpose-driven mindset, it becomes a much greater thing. We now know why we are doing what we are doing and it is being done from our point of power rather than a fear-based decision of what will possibly happen if we don’t do it.
Keeping busy or just going through the motions will never give us the high-quality results that we desire and deserve, and if they do we would probably self-sabotage our efforts.
When we understand who we really are, we would never consider putting forth any lackluster effort.
When we are in the flow we are operating from our true Beingness, and we realize there is nowhere to go and nothing to get because we Have it all Now. Any outward activity occurs naturally from our intuitive urges, and not any desperate attempts to get things done because of any feelings of lack.
This may sound a bit heady but this type of realization occurs as a result of clarity of our purpose and developing the mindset of possibility based on that purpose. This is not a race but a Journey to Understanding who we really are and what we possess right this very moment.
An Intuitive Reflection on the Opposite of Procrastination
Let’s now reflect a bit on this and kick our intuition into gear. Let’s ask a question and get an intuitive poetic reply.
“What is the opposite of procrastination and how can I use it to magnify my life?”
The Opposite of Procrastination
— It seems quite apparent
What the opposite of procrastination would be
No need to think further
It’s easy to see
— Getting stuff done
Even at a frantic pace
Is all that is needed to
Win this race
— But is this fulfilling
A source of happiness and joy
Or merely a remedy
That we employ
— Keeping busy
For its own sake
Is really a waste of time
For goodness’ sake
— Programming ourselves
In a manner like this
Is a mistake
That we should immediately dismiss
— Clarity of vision
Of what we truly desire
Creates the foundation
And ignites the fire
— Driven by purpose
With our eye on the goal
Eliminates uncertainty
While keeping our life whole
— This type of clarity
Increases our strength
Without the need for diversion
Our guidance is sent
— Instead of avoidance
We are intuitively led
As our trust increases
It is our confidence that is fed
— Each step we take
We become eager to proceed
As it is now quite apparent
We are planting a seed
— A purposeful life
Never seeks to delay
Why procrastinate
When we have something meaningful to say.

This just about sums it up. Clarity of thought in our everyday affairs, keeps us centered on what is most important. When we realize our true desires, we cannot stop ourselves from getting stuff done.
It may be uncomfortable at first, to try new things, but reaching our vision is much more vital than any anticipated challenges.
We learn to take one manageable small step at a time and deal with the roadblocks along the way. As we strengthen ourselves, our confidence grows. and procrastination becomes a faint memory.
There is no reason to delay when we know what we want. A purposeful mindset is not only the opposite of procrastination but it is the doorway into a life of wonder and joy.
Let us create this mindset and eliminate any delay in living the life that we are destined to live.
All the very Best,
Joseph William

I love the quote, “Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday.” This is one the best explanation I have heard so far. Thank you very much for sharing this article. Very interesting indeed. Have a great day. Regards. Vlad
Thanks, Vlad. I appreciate your thoughts.
Well I like the take on the opposite of procrastination being a driven mindset. There’s an old saying just because you’re doing a lot doesn’t mean you’re getting a lot done. Planning your work and working your plan. Learning to get comfortable being uncomfortable when time to start or complete a task and that will help with the survival mode a lot of people get stuck in which leads to procrastinating and not taking the leap.
I totally agree, Jacob. Appreciate your thoughts.
