Lake Bohinj Slovenia is a hidden treasure. It is the largest natural lake in the country located at the foot of gorgeous mountains.
Right in the heart of Triglav National Park, which happens to be one of the oldest national parks in Europe, it is right in the middle of a glacier valley. The water freezes during the winter but is very pleasant during the summer months being around 71 degrees F (22 °C).
Lake Bohinj Slovenia — A Bit of History
Situated in the Julian Alps of Slovenia, the history of Lake Bohinj is rooted in the mountainous terrain of the region. The Bohinj Valley is carved from glaciers that created a deep basin that over the years filled with water.
During the Middle Ages, the area served as a trade route for many types of goods including salt. The lake has played an important role in the history of this area.
Sheep and goat herding are what the locals traditionally relied upon. The villages around the lake have been quite isolated due to the steep slopes and poor roads.

I’ve heard so much about Lake Bohinj from friends in Slovenia who rave about its beauty. It sounds like a hidden gem compared to the tourist-packed Lake Bled. I’m excited to visit for the clear waters, alpine scenery, and peace and quiet. The idea of exploring places like the Savica Waterfall and Triglav National Park sounds incredible. Plus, attending unique events like the Cow’s Ball to give a local cultural appeal.
I have also heard about the local cuisine. Traditional dishes often focus on local, seasonal ingredients, including fresh vegetables, game meats, dairy, and hearty grains. One iconic dish is žganci, a type of buckwheat mush, often served with sauerkraut or as a side to stews. It doesn’t sound appetizing, but buckwheat is very tasty, has a lovely nutty taste, and, of course, it s healthy.
There’s also jota, a warming soup of sauerkraut, beans, and potatoes—perfect for the colder months. Sauerkraut is a fermented food and very healthy.
Slovenians are proud of their bread, too, like potica, a rolled pastry filled with walnuts or poppy seeds, typically enjoyed during celebrations. Every meal in Slovenia seems to carry a sense of place and tradition, blending rustic flavors with a touch of refined European influence.
