Can We Avoid Procrastination?

Can we avoid procrastination? Yes, we can! Stay tuned for a few insights and an interesting perspective on this most challenging subject.

Not getting stuff done on time or at all can really be a drag. It literally depletes our energy in non-productive ways; mostly through worry and stress. Let’s see how to go about transforming our approach to getting stuff done.

Can We Avoid Procrastination? — Not with the Same Mindset

Can We Avoid Procrastination

“Procrastination is like a credit card: it’s a lot of fun until you get the bill.”

— Christopher Parker —

We quite often want to improve our lives but keep our same outlook and perspective on life intact. Well, it doesn’t work that way.

We want to avoid the pain and suffering but keep our current self-concept in place. Along with our self-concept is our current belief system that hasn’t served us all that well at least in some areas of our lives.

So, this becomes more of an un-doing process, rather than trying to force ourselves to get stuff done. When we try to force things through willpower our resistance grows and even if we accomplish our task we are tired and stressed.

When we eliminate this false self-concept we have created a new version of ourselves. We realize fear is an illusion and we then can do what is needed to get stuff done even while feeling afraid.

Even though the fear doesn’t immediately go away, it dissipates over time because of our continual actions. We naturally proceed because we are clear on our purpose and goals.

With this new mindset, we are free to move forward and accomplish our tasks.

Creating a New Mindset

“Your mindset matters. It affects everything – from the business and investment decisions you make, to the way you raise your children, to your stress levels and overall well-being.”

— Peter Diamandis —

Now let’s discuss a few ways to create that mindset so things get done more efficiently and effectively.

  • A Grateful Heart — when we are grateful for what we currently have we are positioned to see things as an opportunity to bring value to others. It’s less about “me, me, me” and more about “how can I help you”. This is a transforming experience that connects us with the love vibration within ourselves.
  • Be Around People Who Have the Mindset Desired — when we want to improve our golf game we don’t go to a person who doesn’t play well. At the same time we want to have our new mindset reinforced by people whom we can model and learn. These types of folks want us to succeed.
  • Clarity of Purpose — when we are clear on our purpose and objective and it is aligned with our true values the means are automatically provided. The steps to take will unfold over time as each step opens up new ideas and opportunities. Each step, no matter how insignificant it may appear, is vital to our overall progress. Maintaining our momentum will lead us past any roadblocks along the way.
  • Connect with Our Power Source — when we recognize that our unlimited power resides within ourselves and is not dependent on any outside factors, we are then inspired to connect with this source. The way we connect is by remaining alert and focused in the present moment. It helps to ask ourselves, “Am I present now?”, as this keeps us centered in the “Now”. As we continue to “remind” ourselves to stay present more and more, over time we will feel and experience our true presence beyond our egoic identity. It is at this point that we connect with our power source on a conscious basis.
  • Focus on the Positive — once we remain in the present moment on more of a consistent basis we can make the conscious choice to let go of the stories and lies we have been telling ourselves. We then focus on the truth which is we are unlimited beings quite capable of creating and experiencing joy, love, peace, and harmony. When we lose focus we bring ourselves back to the present and experience the essence of our being.
  • Desire and Persistence — all it takes is a heartfelt desire to change our mindset and the persistence to “undo” our false perceptions and beliefs to allow our inner brilliance to shine through.
  • Personalize our Affirmations — keeping good stuff rolling around in our heads is extremely important when changing our mindset so that we can get things done that are important to us. We don’t just go through the process of repeating stuff that sounds good but doesn’t engage our emotions. The negative stuff we entertain is a lie, but the life-enhancing stuff has to mean something to us for us to stay engaged. Any resistance to the positive stuff is good as it brings us the cause of our negative thoughts and feelings which lies in our limiting beliefs.

Can We Avoid Procrastination When Paralyzed by Fear

“Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. Right now, today, we are still alive, and our bodies are working marvelously. Our eyes can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears can still hear the voices of our loved ones.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh —

It is simply amazing how an illusion with no basis in reality can have such a devastating effect on us. Fear puts us in an “emotional straitjacket”.

That’s why when we are in a panic or fear state it is so easy to stay there with high anxiety. We need to break the pattern.

Get back to the present moment. Move around, take a walk, put on some soothing music, listen to a self-help audio. Do something to break the inertia that keeps us stuck in our default program.

The best thing is to return to the present moment. The truth is that right here and now is absolutely fine. What is messing with us are the stories we are telling ourselves that are increasing our anxiety levels.

When we consciously direct ourselves to the present moment (“Am I present now?), we give ourselves a breather. We can relax a bit and take a break from our self-created horror show. No matter what is happening it is us that is causing our distress.

When paralyzed by fear, take a deep breath, remind ourselves we are okay right this very moment, and consciously choose to take one small step in a positive direction where we can discover a solution to our challenge. Of course, this isn’t easy based on our current programming and conditioning, but it is what it takes to transform our lives.

Can We Avoid Procrastination? Of Course We Can!

Can We Avoid Procrastination

“Acceptance of what has happened is the first step to overcoming the consequences of any misfortune.”

— William James —

When whacked-out stuff happens it is not time to pretend. Things are the way they are, and even though we are afraid, we can take a step in a positive direction. And guess what? The step after that is a bit easier as we continue with momentum.

Check out an article I wrote a couple of years ago on ending procrastination forever. It has some helpful insights into what we are discussing here. This is a process of discovering and then living the truth about ourselves. No more lies.

All it takes is to gain enough clarity by ignoring the noise in our heads for a brief few moments so that we can make a conscious decision to take that first hesitant step. Once the inertia is broken it is all downhill from there by taking the smallest steps necessary to proceed.

We learn much about ourselves along the way and by the time we reach our destination we are no longer the same person. What bothered us before is not even an issue now.

I encourage all to do some soul-searching and then proceed with an enhanced mindset. If we only realized the power we possess we would not hesitate a moment.

In Peace & Love,

Joseph William

  1. What a fantastic and refreshing take on overcoming procrastination! I appreciate how you’ve highlighted the importance of addressing our mindset, rather than just trying to “power through” tasks. Often, the real obstacle is in our beliefs and self-concept, not in the tasks themselves. The way you’ve framed procrastination as a signal to re-evaluate our mindset is powerful. Especially the advice about gratitude and connecting with our inner power—it’s such a gentle but effective approach to reduce anxiety and stay grounded.

The suggestions on surrounding ourselves with like-minded, growth-focused people resonate strongly with me. When we’re around those who embody the mindset we’re aiming for, it’s amazing how naturally our habits shift to align with theirs. It’s like an unspoken accountability.

Your emphasis on personalization with affirmations is another highlight—generic positivity often doesn’t stick, but meaningful affirmations can deeply engage our emotions and inspire real change. Thank you for sharing these transformative insights; I’m inspired to implement them into my own routine to push past procrastination and focus on what truly matters!

  2. Your post resonated with me so much, Joseph, this is what I needed this morning to get me going. How many times have I experienced the emotional straight jacket…It all sounds too familiar! I like the sources you are quoting from; a lot of the wisdom reminds me of Eckart Tolle’s ‘The Power of Now’ which shifted my reality when I discovered it in about 2012. I remember driving long distances and listening to many audios from Eckart’s talks. It was very liberating to learn that we don’t have to identify with our thoughts – i.e. that our negative thoughts are not ‘us’, but that we can observe them and rise above them in the powerful state of NOW. Thanks again for your inspiring words!

  3. Hi Joseph,

This is such an important article for us all.

Procrastination is something we all suffer from, and is something I have needed to work hard at over the years.

I have started to get better at it but there are times when I still need to work on. I am going to read the articles you have recommended and try some of their strategies.

But as you say, mindset is what we need to work on every day. Not just for procrastination but for everything, especially a limitless mindset instead of a limited mindset.

Thank you for sharing and keep up the amazing work.

    All the best,

    Tom
