Bacalar Mexico Resorts — A Little Bit of History of the Area

Laguna de Bacalar, the Lake of Seven Colors, has much history and legends to reveal.

The lake is actually 3.7 billion years old. There is much evidence here of the origin of life on our planet.

It has the largest freshwater microbialite reef (rocklike structures formed by microbes that produce carbonate minerals). Some of these microbialites are over 9,000 years old.

The lake also has stromatolites similar to coral and date way back to 3.5 billion years.

There are a couple of legends about how Lake Bacalar originated. The strictly scientific explanation states the colors may be due to sunlight breaking through at various angles, deeper pools, or different types of soil

The Maya believed their gods chose the area of Bacalar for its extreme beauty and used it as a palette to experiment with different colors.

There are many historical sites in this area. The Fortress de San Felipe Bacalar was constructed in 1729 to protect the inhabitants from pirates. During the Caste War of Yucatan, the fortress was used by the Spanish as an outpost and was seized by Maya rebels in 1859. The town of Bacalar was overrun by pirates in the 17th century.
